The Oudegracht is the heart of Utrecht. You can take beautiful pictures along the canal, whether from the bridge or from the shore. You can also rent a kayak and take pictures from the water. If you climb the tower of the cathedral “Domtoren”, you will be rewarded with a wide view over the city. The tower can only be visited as part of a guided tour. It is the highest church tower in the Netherlands and offers a view as far as Amsterdam. Another tip is the “Pandhof” with the monastery garden of the cathedral, which unfortunately was closed during our visit. We were in the “Flora’s yard“ instead, a little courtyard with a tulip garden. Attention: It’s only open between 12:00 and 16:30. Admission is free.

Utrecht Tipps: Vegane Restaurants und Cafés

Rhabarber

Vegan food in Utrecht

No, in Utrecht there are not only cheeses, stroopwafels and meat croquettes, but also vegan options in many restaurants and cafés. We start the day with a coffee to go at ‘t Koffieboontje and then walk to Café “Rabarber” for breakfast. The menu includes vegan pancakes with maple syrup and pecans and a plate of antipasti and hummus. For a coffee break, we head to the organic café “Keek”. In addition to sandwiches, it also serves a vegan juicy chocolate cake with that tastes like Mousse au Chocolat.

In the evening we eat dinner at “Sla”, a chain that also exists in Amsterdam. “Sla” has a very large selection of vegetarian soups, salads and bowls. I had the bowl with hummus and avocado. Before we go home again, we have a look at the “Street Food Club” – a colorful restaurant that offers hardly any vegan options but has a large drinks menu. I think most of the guest are here to get an Instagram photo. The location reminds me of Palm Springs: black and white tiles, marble tables, plush, palm trees and pink wherever you look. And nobody leaves without a photo in the peacock throne and neon lettering.
