Frome, Somerset
Frome wirkt, als wäre es ein kleiner, hipper Stadtteil von London. Das Viertel am Catherine Hill ist ein winziges Biotop, in dem ihr das Café “Moo and Two”, den Blumenladen „Bramble & Wild“, eine Bar und eine Reihe besonderer Boutiquen und Vintage Läden findet. Um fünf schließen die meisten Läden am Catherine Hill und die Ladenbesitzer strömen Richtung “L’Aperitvo”, der Bar oben auf dem Hügel. Um die Ecke versteckt sich die “Rye Bakery“ in einer Kirche. In einer beeindruckenden Kulisse gibt es neben Kaffee und Kuchen auch ein mal wöchentlich einen Pizza Abend, bei der ungewöhnliche Kreationen gebacken werden, wie Mangold mit Olivenöl und Pistazien. Auch Eiskrem und Limonaden werden hausgemacht. Wegen der großen Spielecke ist die Bakery besonders bei Familien beliebt. Nicht weit von dort findet ihr die “Gentle Street” eine historische Gasse mit Häusern aus dem 16. – 18.Jahrhundert.
Frome seems like a small, hip district of London. The neighborhood at Catherine Hill is a tiny biotope that houses the “Moo and Two café”, the flower shop “Bramble & Wild”, a bar and a number of specialty boutiques and vintage stores. At five PM. most shops close at Catherine Hill and the shopkeepers head towards “L’Aperitvo”, the bar on top of the hill. Around the corner you find “Rye Bakery” in an old church. They serve coffee, bread and cake in an impressive setting. Once a week they have a pizza party, where unusual creations are baked, such as chard with olive oil and pistachios. Also ice cream and lemonades are homemade. Because of the large play area, the bakery is especially popular with families. Not far from there you will find “Gentle Street” a historic lane with houses from the 16th – 18th century.
Bath, Somerset
Bath hat uns erst auf den zweiten Blick gefallen. Da wir Südengland in der Hauptreisezeit im Juli besucht haben, erlebten wir Bath an einem Samstag sehr voll. Sobald man jedoch etwas abseits der Innenstadt unterwegs ist, wird es leerer.Bath hat seinen Namen von den römischen Bädern, die schon seit mehr als 2000 Jahren existieren und die einzige heiße Quelle in England sind. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde Bath zum Kurort.
Aus dieser Zeit stammen eine Reihe gregorianische Häuser, die aus einem regionalen Kalkstein, dem “Bath Stone” gebaut sind. Dazu gehört der royal Crescent (UNESCO Weltkulturerbe), eine Häuserreihe, die wie ein Halbmond formiert ist. Auch am Circus und am Platz an der Church Street/ Abby Green findet man crème- und honigfarbene Häuser, kleine Gassen und beeindruckende Fassaden. Da Bath eine Studentenstadt ist, gibt es eine Reihe Specialty Coffee Cafés hier, wie zum Beispiel zwei Filialen des „Society Café“, „Colonna and Smalls“.
Bath fell to us only at a second glance. As we visited England during the peak tourist season in July, we experienced Bath very crowded on a Saturday. But once you get away from the city center, it gets less crowded.Bath takes its name from the Roman baths, which have existed for over 2,000 years and are the only hot springs in England. The city became a spa in the 16th century. A number of Gregorian houses built from a local limestone called the “Bath Stone” date back to that time. This includes the Royal Crescent (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – a row of houses formed like a crescent. The Circus and the square on Church Street / Abby Green are also home to cream- and honey colored houses, narrow streets and impressive facades. Since Bath is a student city, there are a number of Specialty Coffee Cafés here, such as two branches of the “Society Café”, “Colonna and Smalls”.
Wells und Mells in Somerset
In Wells findet ihr die wahrscheinlich älteste Reihenhaussiedlung der Welt. Die „Vicars’ Close“ liegt hinter der „St. Andrews“ Kathedrale.Die Siedlung wurde im 14.Jahrhundert erbaut. Tagsüber tummeln sich viele Touristengruppen hier. Am Abend war fast niemand dort unterwegs. Etwa eine Stunde entfernt liegt das Dörfchen Mells. Das verschlafene Städtchen ist für das “Talbott Inn” bekannt, eins der ältesten Pubs England. Wir haben uns für einen Besuch im “Walled Garden” direkt gegenüber entschieden. Hier fühlt man sich, als wäre man auf einem Gartenfest gelandet. Inmitten von Obstbäumen, Kräutern, Beeten und Gewächshäusern stehen kleine Bistrotische mit Sonnenschirmen. Es gibt Kaffee, Kuchen, Sandwiches und selbst gemachte Pizzen. In Mells und überall in Südengland stoßen wir auf viele Mini-Flohmärkte: Auf Fensterbänken und Tapeziertischen warten Dachbodenfunde, skurille Porzellanfiguren und zerfledderte Bücher auf einen Käufer. Das Geld wirft man einfach in den Briefkastenschlitz.
In Wells you will find the probably oldest terraced housing estate in the world. The “Vicars’ Close” lies behind the “St. Andrews’ Cathedral.The settlement was built in the 14th century. During the day many tourist groups come here. In the evening, all the tourists were gone. About an hour away is the village of Mells. The sleepy town is known for the “Talbott Inn”, one of England’s oldest pubs.
We decided to visit Walled Garden directly opposite. Here you feel like you stumbled into a garden party. You can have coffee in the midst of fruit trees, herbs, flower beds and greenhouses. In Mells and all over England, we come across lots of mini-flea markets: On window sills and old kitchen tables you can buy attic finds, quirky porcelain figurines and tattered books. The money is thrown into the mailbox slot.
Hastings – East Sussex
Im Gegensatz zum Küstenort Brighton ist Hastings etwas weniger überlaufen. Die Häuser an der Strandpromenade wirken etwas heruntergekommen, doch wenn man in die Altstadt läuft, findet man überall kleine Juwelen. Bäckereien mit einer gigantischen Auslage, Tante-Emma- und Antiquitäten Läden, die aus einem Kinfolk Magazin gefallen sein könnten. Beeindruckend ist der Laden “ A.G. Hendy & Co“, ein alter Haushaltswaren-Laden. Besitzer Alistair Hendy hat 20 Jahre als Fotograf gearbeitet und ein Händchen für Styling. Neben kuriosen Vintage-Schätzen wie Karaffen aus Kristall, viktorianischen Glasglocken und Wandkarten verkauft er ein großes Sortiment an schlicht-schönen Haushaltswaren wie Bürsten, Besen, Keramik und Emaille-Geschirr. Auch die Läden „Butler’s Emporium“ und „Warp and Weft“ sind einen Besuch wert. „Warp and Weft „verkauft selbst genähte Kleidung, handgemachte Schuhe und eine Auswahl an Schmuck und Taschen. Der Laden setzt auf natürliche Materialien, wie Leinen, Leder, Seegras und Wolle. „Butler’s Emporium“ war mal ein Eisenwaren Geschäft und hat die uralten Schränke und Schubladen noch erhalten. Ihr bekommt hier handgesiebte Seifen, Lederschlappen, Teppiche, Bienenwachskerzen und allerlei Accessoires.
Unlike the seaside town of Brighton, Hastings is a little less crowded. The houses on the beach promenade seem a bit run down, but if you walk into the old town, you will find little gems everywhere. Bakeries with a giant display, vinatge and antiques shops that look like out of a Kinfolk magazine. Impressive is the shop “A.G. Hendy & Co” – a homewares store. Owner Alistair Hendy has worked as a photographer for 20 years and has a knack for styling. In addition to vintage treasures such as crystal decanters, Victorian glass bells and wall charts, he sells a wide range of classic household items such as brushes, brooms, ceramics and enamelware.
“Butler’s Emporium” and “Warp and Weft” stores are also worth a visit , “Warp and Weft” sells self-sewn clothing, handmade shoes and a selection of jewelry and bags. The store uses natural materials such as linen, leather, seaweed, and wool. “Butler’s Emporium” used to be an ironmonger’s shop and still has the ancient cabinets and drawers. You can buy soaps, leather slippers, carpets, beeswax candles and all sorts of accessories here.
Lacock in Wiltshire
Bei unserem Besuch in Lacock fühlten wir uns sofort in ein Harry Potter Buch versetzt. Später fanden wir heraus, dass hier auch einige Szenen gedreht wurden, und zwar diejnigen, die in Hogwarts spielen. Auch das Haus, in dem Harry Potter im Film aufgewachsen ist, steht hier. In den Filmen sieht man die Abtei, die Church Street und das Angel Inn. Auch Szenen für „Downton Abbey“ und „Stolz und Vorurteil“ wurden in Lacock gedreht. Die Straßen wirken wie ein perfektes Filmset. Aufdringliche Werbetafeln findet man hier nicht, das Dorf wirkt nahezu unberührt. Wer in Lacock unterwegs ist, kann auch noch einen Abstecher nach Bradford on Avon machen.
On our visit to Lacock, we felt as if were in a Harry Potter book. Later, we found out that some of the scenes were filmed here! Hogwarts and the house where Harry Potter grew up can be seen here. In the movies you can see the Abbey, Church Street and the Angel Inn. Also scenes for “Downton Abbey” and “Pride and Prejudice” were shot in Lacock. Well, the streets seem like a perfect movie set! Intrusive billboards can not be found here, the village seems almost untouched. If you’re in Lacock, you can also make a detour to Bradford on Avon, that is not far from there.
Upper und Lower Slaughter
Upper Slaughter und Lower Slaughter sind zwei benachbarte Dörfer mitten in den Cotswold in Gloucestershire etwa 6 Kilometer von Stop-on-the-Wold. Der kleine Fluss Eye schlängelt sich durch die Ortschaften, in denen ihr zauberhafte Cottages findet. Upper Slaughter gehört zu den wenigen Orten, die im ersten und zweiten Weltkrieg keine Opfer verzeichneten, daher zählt es zu den „Thankful Villages“. Der Upper Slaughter Name stammt von dem alt englischen Wort „slough“, das für Sumpf steht. Am nördlichen Ende von Upper Slaughter zeugt eine alte Burgruine aus dem 12 Jahrhundert von der langen Geschichte des Dorfes. Sehenswert sind die St.Peter’s Church, das alte Schulgebäude, die Rose Cottages und das herrschaftliche Upper Slaugther Manor. Eine echte Augenweide in Lower Slaughter ist die alte Wassermühle, genau wie das Flussufer mit seinen zwei kleinen Brücken und Cottages aus dem berühmten Cotswold Limestone, die das Ufer säumen. Nur rund 230 Menschen leben in Lower Slaughter. Das Dorf lebt von den Touristen, die vor allem zur Mühle und in den alten Riverside Tearoom strömen.
Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter are two neighbouring villages in the middle of the Cotswold in Gloucestershire about 6 kilometres from Stop-on-the-Wold. The small river Eye meanders through the villages where you will find charming cottages. Upper Slaughter is one of the few places that lost no men during the First and Second World War, so it is one of the “Thankful Villages”. The Upper Slaughter name comes from the old English word “slough”, which stands for swamp. At the northern end of Upper Slaughter, an old 12th century castle ruin bears witness to the long history of the village. Worth seeing are St.Peter’s Church, the old school building, the Rose Cottages and the Upper Slaugther Manor. A real feast for the eyes in Lower Slaughter is the old watermill, as well as the riverbank with its two small bridges and cottages from the famous Cotswold Limestone that line the bank. Only about 230 people live in Lower Slaughter. The village lives from the tourists who mainly flock to the mill and the old Riverside Tearoom.
Bibury in den Cotswolds
Bibury liegt in der Region Gloucestershire in der Nähe von Burford. Das Dorf ist so klein, dass ihr für einen Besuch nicht mehr als eine Stunde Zeit einplanen müsst. Es gilt als der Hotspot in den Cotswolds – bestimmt habt ihr die Reihe aus Steinhäusern Arlington Row schon oft auf Instagram gesehen.Wer tagsüber anreist, muss sich dessen bewusst sein, dass er nicht der einzige sein wird, um die fotogenen Cottages zu bestaunen. Es ist ein Mekka für Besucher aus der ganzen Welt, die mit Reisebussen vorfahren. Wir haben das Dorf am Abend besucht und hatten das Glück, nur wenigen Touristen zu begegnen. So konnten wir viele Fotos von den honigfarbenen Steinhäusern machen, die Bibury den Ruf des schönsten Dorfs England eingebracht haben. In den Cottages in der Nähe des Coln Flusses lebten einst Weber.
Bibury is situated in the Gloucestershire region near Burford. The village is so small that you don’t have to plan more than an hour for a visit. It is THE hotspot in the Cotswolds. If you arrive during the day, be aware that you will not be the only one to visit the photogenic cottages at Arlington Row. It is a Mecca for visitors from all over the world who arrive by coach. We visited the village in the evening and were lucky to meet only a few tourists. So we were able to take many photos of the honey-coloured stone houses that have given Bibury the reputation of the most beautiful village in England. Weavers once lived in the cottages near the Coln River.
Polperro in Cornwall
Polperro ist ein kleiner Fischerort an der Südküste von Cornwall wie aus dem Bilderbuch. Der alte Fischerhafen ist von Cottages umgeben. Hier wird kaum noch gefischt, seitdem der Tourismus in Polperro an Bedeutung gewonnen hat. Trotzdem liegen hier noch ein Dutzend Boote. Die stehen bei Ebbe auf Schlick, so wie auf meinem Foto. Beliebt ist das Schmugglermuseum genau wie ein Spaziergang über den South West Coast Path, ein Wanderweg von Loe nach Polperro. Dieser ist etwa 9 Kilometer lang. Hier braucht ihr feste Schuhe und ein wenig Kondition, da es auf und ab geht. Ich habe euch die Route hier verlinkt. Schön fanden wir auch die weiß getünchten Häuser in den engen Gassen, die mit Wimpeln und Blumenampeln geschmückt sind.
Polperro is a small picturesque fishing village on the south coast of Cornwall. The old fishing port is surrounded by cottages. There is hardly any fishing here since tourism in Polperro has grown in importance. Nevertheless, there are still a dozen boats here. They stand on mud at low tide, just like in my picture. The smugglers’ museum is a popular attraction here as well as a walk along the South West Coast Path, a hiking trail from Loe to Polperro. It is about 9 kilometers long. Here you need sturdy shoes and a little bit of fitness, as it goes up and down. I have linked the route here.
